And Baby Makes Three…

24 Apr

So, many of you know that I just started a new job as a Marriage and Family Therapist with a private practice, and I could name off a million reasons why I chose to accept the position.

But, one reason was this: The company offers pre- and post-baby counseling for couples, something I always thought is sorely needed. untitled

In fact, after I visited my Sister, her husband, and my newborn niece, I realized the hospital shouldn’t send any new parent home without a therapist in tow! There are just too many changes, too many issues, too many adjustments to handle all at once without someone to help in the transition.

I lived it (three times, to be exact), and the dynamic often comes down to this: Mom is exhausted, Dad doesn’t know how to help, and, oh yeah, the baby is crying!

I can’t help but think a mediator–or someone well-versed in conflict resolution–would be a great asset to new parents, even if that person comes once a week for six months or so. Let’s face it–every couple could use someone to talk to about their problems, even before they welcome children. But, when that itty bitty newborn comes into the world, you’d be surprised by the big issues that often follow!

You’re too kind! I wish a therapist had come home with me from the hospital!
