Mediation T.V.

22 Aug

O.K. I admit it–Reality T.V. is my guilty pleasure. Especially during the summer, when quality programming is scarce, I tend to record whatever Reality T.V. is on at the moment, just to have something to watch after the kids go to bed.

Today, on an episode of Interior Therapy with Jeff Lewis, I realized that (as much as it pains me to admit) many Reality T.V. hosts are actually practicing mediation. Take last night’s taped episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County–Reunion Part 1. During the episode, Andy Cohen (the moderator) spent an entire hour mediating arguments between bleach-blonde OC Housewives, complete with phrases like, “What would you like to see happen?” and “How do you move forward?”imagesCAG58JO9

On Interior Therapy with Jeff Lewis, Jeff and his assistant visit a home in need of redesign and remodel for about 5 days. During that time, he often notices (surprise!) that the problems with the home’s decor mirror the problems between the inhabitants. So, Jeff does what any mediator would do–help the parties find a way to compromise and come together to fix their problems themselves. It’s pretty entertaining because he’s very blunt and not-so nice about it. But, that’s what gets ratings!

What’s strange is that watching the hosts mediate arguments and disputes is actually entertaining! I thought I was the only one enthralled by watching someone help parties reach compromise!

So, I’ll keep watching my Reality T.V. And mediating. And enjoying how much they both have in common.
